The Dead Nation

A Jewish doctor from Bucharest begins keeping a diary after the 1937 election of an anti-Semitic Nationalist to Prime Minister of Romania.
Heralded auteur Radu Jude (Aferim!, Scarred Hearts) reads between the lines of this telling text, sets the chilling narrative against everyday stills taken by a rural photographer, and a stark soundtrack composed of patriotic anthems from the time. These interwoven elements unlock a harrowing story that the photos alone could not reveal—one of rising anti-Semitism, violence, and deportations in the lead up to the Romanian Holocaust.
